Uniforms for the 2023-24 School Year
Students will wear uniforms this year.
Appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. The
student dress policy is intended to create a positive school climate of respect for self
and others. Appropriate dress and appearance projects a positive image of seriousness
and reflects respect for teaching and learning. Being mindful of one's appearance is
preparation for future school, work, and career success.
Smythe students are required to wear a school uniform everyday. A clothes closet is
available for students who need assistance getting proper uniform elements.
Non-uniform days may be earned throughout the year. On these days the TRUSD dress
code must be followed as outlined in the 2022-2023 Student and Family Handbook,
found HERE (pg. 45). On topics not specified in the Smythe Uniform/Dress Code policy,
the TRUSD dress code applies.

What happens if a student is not in uniform?
If a student does not wear their uniform:
1. Teachers will send the student to the office
2. The office staff will give the student a uniform if we have the right size/clothing
item.
3. The office staff will call home and ask parents to bring a uniform if we do not
have the right size/clothing item.
4. The office staff will return the child to class as soon as possible so as to interrupt
learning as little as possible.
If a student does not wear a uniform repeatedly or if the student refuses to wear it out of
defiance, teachers will attempt to solve the problem at the classroom level. If necessary,
the principal/vice principal will handle it as a disciplinary situation and will contact
parents to find a solution.

TOPS: May be a solid white, black, or forest green collared polo/button down shirt or
turtleneck (No sheer fabric). Tops must have sleeves and a student must be able to lift
both arms over their head at the same time and not expose skin. Shirts must not
contain artwork, advertisements or designs. Tank tops and undershirts cannot be
visible at any time. School sponsored shirts are allowed.

skorts, jumpers or dresses which are not more than 3 inches above the knee.
Waistbands must be worn at the student's waist. Pants must fit well, not be baggy, or
expose skin, and cannot touch the ground. Belts may not be longer than 3 inches,

school spirit sweatshirts or solid colored sweaters. Outerwear should not have
logos/graphics. If they do, the Twin Rivers dress code applies.
FOOTWEAR: Students are strongly encouraged to wear lace-up or Velcro sneakers.
Sandals may be worn, but must have a back strap. Students must have
safe/appropriate shoes for P.E. class.

Students are allowed to wear sweatshirt hoodies and beanies only. Sweatshirt
hoodies and beanies may not be worn inside any school building. Other head
coverings are permitted if they are a part of religious attire.
ACCESSORIES: Small articles of jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches,
etc.) are permitted as long as they do not cause a distraction within the learning
environment. The school cannot be responsible for lost, stolen or misplaced articles of
jewelry.
